The (Highly Subjective) Plan: A Saigon Symphony of Sweat and Soul (and Maybe a Few Regrets)
Day 1: Arrival of the Clumsy Tourist and the Sweet Smell of Chaos
- Morning (8:00 AM -ish): Landed! Tan Son Nhat Airport. Survived the baggage claim mosh pit (seriously, people, personal space!). Finding a cab was like a frantic game of musical chairs, except the chair was a beat-up taxi and the music was the incessant honking of scooters. Made it! My heart is practically punching a hole in my chest.
- Morning (9:30 AM - 11:00 AM): Arrive at Central Studio 1A. Oh man, the studio is… intimate. Not complaining, just… taking a deep breath. Did I mention I'm a mosquito magnet? Immediately spritzed myself with bug spray, hoping it doesn't end up making me smell like a citronella candle. Checked in. Settling in is like trying to wrangle cats, or maybe just me and my backpack (I’m not sure) but finally done.
- Lunch (Around 12:00 PM -ish): Ben Thanh Market. Okay, this is already intense. The sheer smell of everything - spices, sizzling meats, the promise of delicious and probably slightly-questionable treats. I’m completely overwhelmed but also, so hungry. I ordered something that looked like a delicious mess of noodles and meat, and prayed I wouldn't need the facilities in record time. (Spoiler: I didn't. Victory!)
- Afternoon (1:30 PM - 4:00 PM): Lost myself (literally) in the market. Got completely haggled for a scarf I didn't even need (but it's so pretty!). Tried to take a photo of some fruit, got yelled at by a vendor. Lesson learned – ask first, snap later. Definitely got scammed for a "genuine" silk scarf (which I’m pretty sure is polyester).
- Before Sunset (4:30 PM - 7:00 PM): Wandered around the neighborhood trying to find a coffee shop. Ended up at a place with the most incredible iced coffee I've ever tasted. Seriously, pure, cold heaven. People watching is a sport, and I'm pretty sure I'm winning. Watched the world go by… mostly scooters, lots of scooters!
- Evening (7:00 PM - till I crash): Tried the street food. Ordered something with a name I couldn’t pronounce. It exploded in my mouth, and I’ve never experienced anything more wonderful. Then, I tripped over a curb (grace, I have none) and scraped my knee. Okay, Saigon and I are in a tumultuous relationship rn.
Day 2: History, Honking and a Heart Full of Pho (or, The Day My Stomach Did a Bit of a Dance)
- Morning (9:00 AM-ish): Woke up surprisingly ok! Went to bed by 10:30 pm (which may or may not sound like a crazy early hour for someone on vacation, but I had a long day and a scraped knee to heal). Walked around the neighborhood looking for a place to have breakfast.
- Morning (9:30 AM-12:00 PM): The War Remnants Museum. Sobering. Heavy. Completely knocked the wind out of me. I will say I’ve definitely never had a history lesson like this. I feel like I need to read everything and absorb it all.
- Lunch (12:00-1:00 PM): Pho time! Found a little hole-in-the-wall place that looked promising (aka, full of locals, aka, no English menus). Spent approximately five minutes gesturing and pointing before successfully ordering. The pho was… divine. Seriously, I could bathe in the broth.
- Afternoon (1:30 PM - 4:00 PM): Took a rickshaw (I know, touristy!) through the city. The traffic is insane. Constant honking, weaving scooters… it's a symphony of chaos I'm actually starting to enjoy? Saw the Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral (beautiful!) and the Central Post Office (also beautiful!). Made several poor people-watching choices.
- Late Afternoon/Evening (4:00 PM - until the food poisoning kicks in…jk jk… or am I?): Tried to find a rooftop bar for sunset. Got lost. Again. Asked for directions. Got even more lost. Ended up at a random bar with a view. Drank something with copious amounts of ice. Might have also flirted with the bartender.
Day 3: Markets Again - and a Lesson in Laundry (and then a mental breakdown when I get back to my "delightful" studio)
- Morning (9:00 AM) Walked into Ben Thanh Market again. I didn’t learn my lesson. I’m buying EVERYTHING. A nice shirt, a pair of pants…
- Morning (11:00 AM) I went back to Central Studio and found there was a laundry service. Well, who would have thought? Perfect. I have a lot of clothes to wash. Gave them clothes to wash, and now waiting for about 3 hrs
- Lunch (2:00 PM): I got my clothes back. They were kind of messy… and not fully dry (so I found out).
- Afternoon (3:00 PM-5:00 PM): Took a nap in my room. Woke up feeling miserable.
- Evening (7:00 PM): Walked around by the area. Found a little bar. I drank a beer and watched the street people. Then I went back to the Central Studio.
- Night (9:00 PM): Packed my bags.
Why This Trip is Already a Success (Even With the Mess)
- The People: Seriously, the people of Saigon are amazing. So kind, so resourceful. Even when I’m fumbling around like an idiot, they smile and help me out.
- The Food! Need I say more? Seriously, I'm going to need a new pair of pants when I get home.
- The Experience: Even the bad stuff (the tripping, the getting lost, the potential for food poisoning) is part of the adventure. It's real. It's raw. It's… me.
The Truth? This whole thing is a work in progress. I'm probably going to get lost a few more times. I'm sure I'll embarrass myself. There will be moments where I want to crawl back into bed and never leave. But I wouldn't trade it for anything. Because this trip, this chaotic, beautiful mess, is teaching me to live. And that, my friends, is the best souvenir of all.

¿Por qué te debería importar? Mmm, bueno, si te va lo auténtico, lo vibrante y no le tienes miedo a un poco de aventura... ¡entonces sí, deberías importarte! Es como… es como si te dieras un golpe en la cabeza con una baguette crujiente (¡en el buen sentido!).
¿De verdad está *dentro* del Mercado de Ben Thanh? ¿No es eso... ruidoso? (Porque yo soy un poco... delicado.)
¡Sí, está *dentro* del mercado! Literalmente. ¡Y sí, es ruidoso! Pero... a ver, el "ruido" es parte del encanto, ¿sabes? Es la sinfonía de la vida vietnamita. Claro, hay motores de motos que rugen, vendedores que gritan (y a veces, gritos de emoción por un buen regateo), y el alegre bullicio de la gente. Pero el estudio... es sorprendentemente tranquilo, una vez que cierras la puerta.
Recuerdo una vez… me quedé allí un par de noches. La primera noche, me desperté como a las cinco de la mañana, aterrorizado por el ruido. Pensé que me iba a volver loco. Pero al segundo día, me había acostumbrado. Era como una especie de… arrullo. Como si el mercado fuera mi despertador natural. Un despertador muy, MUY ruidoso. Así que, prepárate para el ruido, pero no te preocupes. Es parte de la experiencia. Y con unos tapones para los oídos, ¡eres invencible! (Deberías llevar tapones, créeme).

Una vez, y esto es importante, vi una cucaracha. Pequeña, inocente, no hizo nada. Pero ahí estaba. ¡Me dio un susto de muerte! Pero luego pensé, "Oye, estás en Vietnam, amigo. Es parte del paquete turístico". Así que yo diría, que si eres un germófobo extremo, quizás no es el lugar para ti. Pero si puedes tolerar un poco de "autenticidad" (y una cucaracha ocasional), sobrevivirás. Y quizá hasta te diviertas. ¡Yo sobreviví!
¿Cómo es el estudio, por dentro? ¿Es moderno? ¿Antiguo? ¿Minimalista? (¡Necesito saberlo!)
El estudio... es... encantadoramente peculiar. Digamos eso. No es *excesivamente* moderno, definitivamente no minimalista, y no diría que es "antiguo" en el sentido de "vintage elegante". Es… práctico. Tiene lo que necesitas: una cama cómoda, un baño, una pequeña cocina (¡donde puedes intentar cocinar, fracasar y comer en la calle, como yo!), y una zona para sentarte y relajarte.
La decoración es… digamos, ecléctica. Hay un toque vietnamita, por supuesto. Y probablemente algunas cosas que el propietario recogió en algún bazar local. Es como entrar en la casa de alguien, no en un hotel impersonal. Y a mí, personalmente, eso me encanta. Tiene personalidad. Mucha. Y el balcón... ¡el balcón es oro! Perfecto para tomarte un café por la mañana y observar el caos (o la calma) del mercado.
¿Qué hay de la comida? ¡Dime que hay comida! (¡Porque la necesito!)
¡Oh, sí! ¡Comida, comida, comida! Estás *literalmente* en el paraíso gastronómico. El mercado de Ben Thanh es una fiesta para tus papilas gustativas. Fideos pho, rollos de primavera frescos, batidos de frutas… ¡todo a tu alcance!
Recuerdo… una vez, probé un plato que no tenía ni idea de qué era. Era como… una especie de caldo misterioso con trozos de carne que no logré identificar. ¡Pero estaba delicioso! Creo que fue una de las mejores comidas que comí en mi vida. Y lo más importante, no me puse malo (¡milagro!). Así que, sí, hay comida. Mucha comida. Prepárate para comer hasta que explotes. ¡Y por todos los dioses, prueba el café vietnamita con leche condensada! ¡Es adictivo! (Yo estoy enganchado).
¿Es fácil moverse por la zona? ¿Puedo simplemente… caminar? (¡Porque odio los taxis!)
¡Sí! ¡Absolutamente! ¡Puedes caminar! El estudio está en una ubicación fantástica. Puedes caminar a muchos lugares de interés, restaurantes, tiendas… ¡todo! La zona es muy animada, concurrida, pero segura. Yo pasé horas simplemente paseando por las calles, observando a la gente, perdiéndome en el laberinto de mercados.
Una vez, me perdí (¡como siempre!), pero fue genial. Descubrí un pequeño puesto de comida callejera que hacía los mejores banh mi que he probado. Así que, sí, camina, piérdete, explora. Es la mejor manera de descubrir la magia de Ho Chi Minh City. Aunque bueno, si te cansas de andar, puedes usar (con precaución) un Grab (el Uber vietnamita), alquilar una moto (si te atreves... ¡yo no!) o usar el transporte público. ¡Pero camina!
