This is my attempt at planning, but honestly, knowing my track record, it'll probably resemble more of a beautiful, chaotic, wine-soaked watercolor painting than a rigid, well-structured oil masterpiece.
Relais Villa Angiolina: Diary of a Semi-Competent Traveler
Day 1: Arrival & The Case of the Missing Luggage (and My Sanity?)
Afternoon (late): Arrive at Florence Airport (FLR). Or, attempt to arrive. Delayed flight, of course. Are you even a real traveler unless you’ve spent a good portion of your life staring at a departures board, silently cursing the airlines? Finally, finally land. Breathe. Find baggage claim. Panic. My luggage is… GONE. Vanished. Poof! Apparently, it’s currently sunbathing in Reykjavik. Iceland! Of all the places. Seriously considered a spontaneous trip there just to hunt it down, but instead, I'm stuck in a borrowed sweater which is 2 sizes smaller and not me at all.
- Mental Note: Learn some basic Icelandic phrases. Just in case. (Highly unlikely).
Early Evening: Taxi to Relais Villa Angiolina. The drive itself! Honestly, the rolling hills of Tuscany are even more breathtaking in person. Stunning. Utterly and completely stunning. I may have gasped a little… and maybe started crying a little (mostly because of the luggage, but also the beauty). Check in. Stressed. Smile. Try to look serene. Fail. The villa is beyond gorgeous, though. The frescoes! The gardens! The pool… I’m going to need that pool to survive.
Evening: Dinner at the villa's restaurant. Ordered pasta. Ate the entire plate. Ordered another plate. That olive oil! The herbs! Sigh. Possibly the best pasta I've ever had. The wine flowed. Possibly a bit too freely. Spent an hour attempting to explain the Reykjavik luggage debacle to a bewildered waiter who (bless his heart) pretended to understand. Ended the night staring at the stars, contemplating the mysteries of the universe, and the whereabouts of my favorite floral maxi dress.
Day 2: Siena & The Pizza Predicament
- Morning: Attempt at a "leisurely" breakfast. Failed again. I'm a fast eater. Can't help it. Scrambled eggs! Fresh fruit! Coffee! Glorious. Decided to actually try a walk to get more energy and go to Siena. Siena is just so beautiful, like a painting.
- Mid-morning: Drive to Siena. Found a parking spot after circling the city like a vulture for an hour… or three (time becomes a blur when parking is involved). Siena is amazing. The Piazza del Campo! Gorgeous! The Duomo di Siena! Majestic and breathtaking. Wandered around for hours, getting delightfully lost in the medieval alleyways.
- Lunch: Pizza. Oh, the pizza. Found a cute little pizzeria tucked away on a side street. Ordered a Margherita. Or at least, I thought I did. What arrived was a monstrous, overloaded pizza covered in…anchovies. Anchovies! I HATE anchovies. My Italian had completely failed me. Sat there, staring at this fishy behemoth, debating between being polite, or just leaving. But I am the owner of a very large stomach. Ate it. Most of it. Regretted every bite. Swore off anchovies forever (until tomorrow, probably). My stomach hurt, but I survived.
- Afternoon: Gelato. Needed to cleanse my palate (and my soul) after the pizza. Found a gelateria with way too many flavors. Took a risk with fig and mascarpone. Success! Divine. The gelato washed away the anchovy-induced trauma. Walked some more, bought way too many souvenirs.
- Evening: Back at the villa. More pasta. More wine. Feeling slightly less stressed. Finally started to relax and feel a little bit like I was truly on holidays.
Day 3: Wine, Wandering & The Great Olive Oil Revelation
- Morning: Wine tasting! Yes! Drove to a cantina in the Chianti region. The scenery! The vineyards! The sun! Felt like I was walking in a dream. The wine was exquisite, of course. Learned a little about the winemaking process, probably retained about 5%.
- Mid-morning: Olive oil tasting! This was the real revelation. I never thought I could get so excited about olive oil. The different varieties! The aromas! The tastes! Mind. Blown. Bought a bottle (or three… or four). Imagining drizzling this liquid gold on everything back home.
- Lunch: Simple picnic in the Tuscan countryside. Cheeses, bread, that glorious olive oil, and, naturally, more wine. Found a nice spot under an olive tree, ate slowly, and breathed deeply. Felt a sense of peace that I desperately needed.
- Afternoon: Wandering around the small towns near the Villa. Soaked in the atmosphere. Saw a family of ducks crossing a road. It was the most charming thing I’ve ever seen.
- Evening: Cooking class at the Villa. Learned (tried!) to make pasta from scratch. Messy. Hilarious. Delicious. Accidentally spilled flour everywhere. Made friends in the kitchen. Laughed until my sides hurt. The best experience of the trip, so far.
Day 4: Lucca & The Case of the Lost (and Found?) Dress
- Morning: Day trip to Lucca. Walked the city walls. Wonderful views. Explored the historic center. More charming streets, quaint shops, and delicious food.
- Afternoon: Decided to take a break from the heat, and go to a local boutique. I went into this shop, and saw a beautiful floral maxi dress, and it looked like my favourite, lost, dress. I immediately went to the shop to try it on, and my jaw dropped. It was mine. My original dress (or at least, the same) and also my luggage miraculously showed up at the hotel. Did I just get a good day?
- Evening: Celebrating with a delicious and big dinner, eating the best food of my life!
- Night: Sleep after a long but wonderful day.
Day 5: Final Day. It’s Never Easy.
- Morning: Breakfast. (More eggs!)
- Late Morning: Last walk around the Villa. Just took a deep breath.
- Afternoon: I'm writing this from the café now.
Reflections:
Tuscany has a way of getting under your skin. It's chaotic, beautiful, frustrating, and absolutely unforgettable. I didn’t stick to the plan but I'll take messy, honest, funny, and absolutely human any day. I learned that sometimes, the best experiences are the unplanned ones. And maybe, just maybe, I'll return to Relais Villa Angiolina one day. And hopefully, my luggage will already be there.
